  15. <p>     DIED. JOHN H. DESSAUER, 88, research head of Xerox Corp.; in
  16. Rochester, New York. In 1946 Dessauer was investigating new
  17. technologies for Xerox--then the Haloid Co.--when he noticed
  18. a reference in a trade publication to "electrophotography."
  19. Dessauer swiftly recognized the potential of the process, invented
  20. by Chet Carlson, to duplicate documents, and persuaded Haloid
  21. to acquire the rights to it. Dessauer led the team that produced
  22. the first commercial copier in 1959.
